Learn About Babywearing

A couple of weeks ago I realized that not everyone knows about babywearing and the benefits that it brings to new parents or caregivers. Babywearing is an invaluable tool that sometimes goes unrecognized. Bringing awareness to such an important tool can tremendously help parents during the postpartum period until the toddler years.

There are many ways to wear a baby: wraps, slings, and carriers are the most common.

Wraps: a long piece of fabric that you configure and tie around your body. Usually over your shoulders and across your mid-section which then carries your baby.

Sling: a sling goes over one shoulder and lies across your torso.

Structured Carrier or Soft Carrier: Like a backpack, 2 straps connect over the shoulders at the back and has a waist strap to distribute the weight evenly. These carriers are able to hold a baby on your chest or on your back depending on the brand and age of the baby.

There are so many types of carriers out there, these are the brands I see the most often/ the ones that I have used before and love:

BENEFITS

  1. A baby is less likely to cry when in direct contact with a parent or caregiver= happy baby.

  2. Both hands are free= able to do many tasks which you wouldn't be able to do if holding a baby in your arms. These tasks include the dishes, laundry, cooking, cleaning and grocery shopping or errands.

  3. Babywearing strengthens the bond between the baby being worn and the adult holding the caregiver.

  4. Helps with the discomfort of reflex because the baby is situated upright.

  5. A baby feels safer when being worn because it reminds them of being in the womb, which allows them to be calmer.

  6. Anyone can babywear: parents, grandparents, aunts/uncles, caregivers, doulas, friends, etc.

  7. Gives you the opportunity to go explore nature without bringing a stroller.

EXTRA TIPS AND THINGS TO REMEMBER

  • A baby should be visible and kissable at all times.

  • Back support for the person carrying the baby is most important. If a carrier causes discomfort try adjusting the support straps or reposition a wrap or ssling.

  • Nothing should be obstructing the baby's face, never zip your jacket all the way up.

  • Each carrier is different so refer to its manual on how to properly wear a baby.

  • YouTube is your friend when learning how to use your carrier for the first time.

  • Try to find a carrier that doesn't have straps rubbing against the breasts as they could cause discomfort if breastfeeding.
